The National Museum in Szczecin is currently the largest cultural institution in West-Pomeranian voivodship. It is a classic multi-department museum taking care of over 150 thousand objects including works of old and contemporary art and relics of archaeology, nautology, ethnography and numismatics.
The Szczecin Museum also contains the largest Polish collection of exhibits related to material culture of non-European countries (Africa, America and Oceania). The Museum’s interests focus mainly on topics of Pomerania and the Baltic Sea. In the spirit of multi-cultural and cross-border dialogue it builds regional, national and European identity of West Pomerania and its residents.
Opposite the Museum building, around 1914, a two-figure sculpture of Hercules fighting with a centaur was located. The artwork, founded by Szczecin consul Kisker, was designed by Ludwig Manzel.
The National Museum building takes the central place in the complex of Wały Chrobrego. Built in years 1907-1913 according to Wilhelm Meyer Schwartau’s design, since 1913 housed The City Museum.
