Rectory building of the Szczecin University
The current building of the Rectorate of the University of Szczecin was constructed in 1888 as a municipal gymnasium. It was the first building on the street that had been laid out shortly before.
Above the main entrance of the new “König Wilhelm Gymnasium” building, a shell-shaped niche was created, which once held a bust of King Wilhelm. Only the shell has survived to this day. On the building’s façade, there are two Latin inscriptions: “We learn not for school, but for life” and “A healthy mind in a healthy body.”
In 1944, the building was severely damaged during Allied air raids. After the war, it was rebuilt. During the renovation, the roof structure was significantly simplified. The construction material – red brick – was characteristic of public buildings built at that time.
After the war, the building that now serves as the Rectorate of the University of Szczecin housed, in succession: a primary school, the State Educational Institute for Deaf Children, the Faculty of Physical Education of the Teacher Training College, the Institute of Physical Culture of the Higher Pedagogical School, and the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Szczecin. It has served its current function as the Rectorate since 1995.
