An important distinction for Szczecin and one of its most remarkable historic landmarks: Szczecin’s Central Cemetery has officially been designated a Polish Monument of History (Pomnik Historii). The presidential decree dated 28 September 2026 was published on 14 October. It is the first heritage site in Szczecin to receive this prestigious national recognition.

The Monument of History designation is one of Poland’s most important forms of heritage recognition and protection. It is awarded to sites of outstanding historical, architectural and cultural significance. The designation may also support a potential future application for UNESCO World Heritage status, although inclusion on the UNESCO list requires a separate nomination and assessment process.

Szczecin’s Central Cemetery officially opened on 6 December 1901. Its original layout was designed by the renowned local architect Wilhelm Meyer-Schwartau, while later extensions were planned by Georg Hannig. Today, it is the largest cemetery in Poland and one of the largest in Europe, known for its monumental main entrance, historic chapel, impressive avenues and numerous memorial sites.

One of the cemetery’s most distinctive features is its park-like landscape. Approximately 415 species and varieties of trees and shrubs grow here, including plants originating from different parts of the world. Ginkgo trees, silver maples, yews and various conifers create a remarkable green setting. In some areas, away from the burial sections, walking through the cemetery feels much like exploring an extensive landscaped garden.

The Central Cemetery is also an important place for discovering Szczecin’s history. Visitors can find historic graves of former residents, the Pioneers’ Section commemorating the city’s early post-war Polish inhabitants, military burial grounds and monuments dedicated to events of the 20th century. Designated walking routes offer opportunities to explore both the cemetery’s architecture and its rich natural environment.

If you are planning a weekend trip to Szczecin, the Central Cemetery deserves a place on your sightseeing itinerary. It offers a different perspective on the city’s history while providing a peaceful setting surrounded by greenery. Its new Monument of History status confirms the importance of this extraordinary heritage site well beyond the region.
