The monument, shaped as an earthen hill planted with linden trees, was raised in 1808 by French troops stationed in nearby Krzekowo to commemorate the thirty-ninth birthday of Emperor Napoleon I.

After Szczecin was retaken by the Prussians in 1814, the symbolic meaning of the site was significantly altered. The hill was renamed German Hill (German: Deutscher Berg), and a cast-iron column topped with the so-called Iron Cross was erected at its summit. The Iron Cross mirrored the design of a newly established military decoration created to honor soldiers who had fought in the war against Napoleon.
