In 1908 city authorities were gifted an area of the current Jasne Błonia by Martin Quistorp. Three years later they began to develop a new square for residents by planting 205 plane trees. The statue of Pope John Paul II stands in the centre of this square.

Pope John Paul II met with the residents of West Pomerania on 11 June 1987. To celebrate that, a monument to this outstanding Pole was unveiled in the square eight years later.
