Autumn is a season of remembrance and reflection, and one of Szczecin's most remarkable historic landmarks offers a special opportunity to explore the city's past. Between 31 October and 8 November 2026, three guided walks will take place at the Central Cemetery in Szczecin – two in Polish and one in German.

At this time, there is another important reason to discover the cemetery. Szczecin's Central Cemetery has been recognised as a Polish Monument of History (Pomnik Historii). The presidential regulation granting this prestigious designation was published on 14 October 2026. It is the first historic site in Szczecin to receive this distinction, one of Poland's highest forms of recognition for cultural heritage.

Opened on 6 December 1901 and originally designed by architect Wilhelm Meyer-Schwartau, the Central Cemetery is Poland's largest cemetery and one of the largest in Europe. Its monumental main gate, historic chapel, remarkable funerary sculptures and extensive tree-lined avenues make it an extraordinary example of landscape architecture. In autumn, the grounds resemble a peaceful historic park.
