The monument designed by Gustaw Zemła was unveiled on 3 September 1979 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Nazi attack on Poland.

It is a symbol of three generations of Polish people: those who shaped the national existence for a thousand years since the beginning of the existence of the Polish state, those who currently shape this existence and those who will consolidate it in the future.

Since 1979, the monument has witnessed the most important events in the history of Szczecin. From the very beginning it has been a place of patriotic manifestations, regardless of one’s religious and political beliefs.
